Electronic Waste Pollution in Hong Kong

Electronic waste (e-waste) pollution in Hong Kong remains a serious environmental challenge, driven by rapid technology turnover and high consumption of electrical and electronic devices. Hong Kong generates around 70,000 tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) annually, including items like computers, televisions, refrigerators, air-conditioners, washing machines, dryers, dehumidifiers, printers, scanners, and monitors. This equates to one of the highest per capita e-waste generation rates in Asia, with recent estimates at about 20 kg per person. Improper handling can release hazardous substances—such as heavy metals, flame retardants, and toxic plastics—into soil, water, and air, leading to contamination, marine pollution, and health risks via the food chain.

Key Features of Producer Responsibility Schemes

Improper handling of electronic waste in Hong Kong releases hazardous substances—such as heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium), flame retardants, and toxic plastics—into the environment. These toxins leach into soil and groundwater, contaminating drinking water sources and agricultural land, which can lead to long-term damages to the ecosystem. In landfills, e-waste generates leachate—a toxic liquid that pollutes rivers and coastal waters, harming marine life and entering the food chain through bioaccumulation. Informal disposal or burning releases dioxins, furans, and other persistent organic pollutants into the air, worsening air quality, greenhouse gas emissions and overall environmental health. Globally, e-waste mismanagement results in billions in lost resources (e.g., recoverable metals like copper and gold) and significant environmental costs.

Human health risks are equally alarming. Exposure to e-waste toxins can cause neurological damage, developmental issues, respiratory problems, and reproductive harm, particularly in communities near disposal sites. Without robust management, e-waste pollution in Hong Kong further accelerates landfill exhaustion.
